Over 100 Years of Golf...
Leroy Anderson purchases the southern 85 acres of the Hartson Ranch in Prescott, AZ and hires Jock McLaren, a golf professional from Scotland to create a 9-hole golf course on the flatlands west of Indian Hill.
With a sand/oil mixture for its greens and tees, and native land fairways, Hassayampa Country Club opens its doors for the very first time playing as a 2,820 yard, par 37, 9-hole course.
Harvey Cory, a Chicago investor and inventor, saved Hassayampa by purchasing the property before bankruptcy and also purchased the 160 acres of the surrounding land. Cory agrees to spend $3,000 annually for upkeep of the course along with additional capital improvement including: a new clubhouse, replacing the sand and oil green and tees with cottonseed, construct Arizona's first olympic sized swimming pool and much more!
Ground is broken for a new HCC clubhouse which includes a large fireplace along with stone serving tables and stone seating. These stone constructs can still be found today.
The new Clubhouse opens its doors and Cory hires the world famous trick shot artist Art Ashton as head pro/club manager. HCC would later become the home of the Prescott City Championship.
Cory begins construction on the "Cottages" which are still around to this day and have been placed on the national registry of historic places.
Hassayampa Country Club hosts Tex Ritter and Dorothy Fay Southworth for the first wedding on Club grounds.
Harvey Cory passes away and his grandson, Jack Bartlett, becomes the Club owner.
Bartlett changes all tee, greens, and fairways to bent grass.
Due to increased city water costs, Hassayampa Country Club closes for the next 30 years.
Bartlett sells the 245 acres of land to a developer who also purchases 181 additional acres to construct an 18-hole golf course.
Hassayampa Golf Club, the 18-hole par 71, Tom Weiskopf Signature Course is opened for business. Hassayampa Golf Club would only stay in business 10 years.
Jerre and Mary Joy Stead purchase the Club and rebrand to Capital Canyon Club, a testament to Prescott's rich history. Capital - as Prescott was the first territorial capital of Arizona. Canyon - in commemoration of the Grand Canyon State. Club - as this club is now and will forever be, Prescott's Premier Golf and Social Club.
